Previously on Starbase Frontier:
Kagami was watching on from a distance, smiling to herself.
"Are you sure your husband wouldn't have adored her, Kagami?" Tadao remarked as he returned to check up on them. "I mean... what amount of work could ever compare to little moments like these?"
"Oh he would have in his own way," Kagami said. "He offered to resign from Starfleet the week she was born. But as I told you, he never got to that..." she let out a long yawn. "And I don't think I've ever been this tired." She crossed her arms on the table and rested her head down.
Tadao smiled. "Well, I can't guarantee I'll be of much help here, but if I could at the very least make you a little more comfortable?" he politely offered.
"Comfortable doesn't matter, unless you have any tricks to help me actually fall asleep..." Kagami complained. "And no singing lullabies. Those don't work." She let out another long yawn. "Athrun used to have a way to help me get to sleep..." she muttered.
"That could be taken so many ways..." Tadao chuckled.
Kagami turned her head to look up at Tadao. "Heh... Whats that supposed to mean?"
Tadao blushed. "Well, um... not sure I meant it that way, necessarily... I mean, it's not like I was personally thinking of you and your husband in a dirty way, I'm just commenting that someone who's less discerning might conceivably look at it that way?"
Kagami couldn't help but smirk at him. "Oh look its got you all flustered..." she said as she sat back upright. She then shuffled out of her seat and took his hand. "So... you have a back office right... Actually, I know you do, I command this base..." she looked him directly in the eyes a slight blush on her face. "How about we borrow it and you can try to help me fall asleep..."
...
"...W-what?" Tadao stammered in wide-eyed disbelief.
No way; absolutely no way this was happening right now; no way that a Kagami Izumi, of all people, was just casually tossing out an offer like that-!
Kagami determined, pulled him along. "Oh just shush and come along!" She told him leading him towards the back of the restaurant.
"Kagami!" Tadao attempted to protest. "Surely, we're not doing what I think you want us to do-!"
"Thats exactly what we're going to do!" She responded.
As he was led out of sight, Tadao glanced over at Aaron and mouthed for him to take over hosting duties- and hopefully give them a little bit of privacy if this was going where he thought it was.
Aaron blinked a few times in surprise before turning back to the bar. He then reached down under the bar and switched on the music system. 'Probably best we have some background noise...' he thought as he turned to the customers.
and now... the continuation!
What transpired in Tadao's office was exactly what you'd expect; saliva was exchanged, clothes were removed, and fingers awkwardly explored new territories that up until this point had been off-limits for the both of them. But perhaps most telling was that the encounter felt surprisingly, and yet blissfully natural. It was if- for just a moment- that the decades peeled away and Kagami and Tadao were living another life- one where they'd never parted ways, and Tadao had finally worked up the courage to tell Kagami all those things he'd suppressed for so long. And while in the heat of their passion, it felt like the moment transcended the fabric of time itself, all too fleetingly it had to end, and the two soon found themselves back in the real world, awkwardly searching for something to say.
After they had both finished having some 'fun', Kagami let out a sigh of relief. She was now standing back facing Tadao as she pulled on her pajama top and fixed it so it was straight. Her face was bright red and she was trying to avoid his eye contact as she finished getting dressed back into her nightwear.
"Hey, um... Kagami?"
Kagami slowly turned around. "I know..." she said nervously. "I shouldn't have just gone ahead and done that right?"
"Uh, well, see..." It appeared that this was just as awkward for Tadao as it was Kagami. And frankly, from her point of view, who could blame her? This wasn't what friends did, and the both of them knew it; the tricky part was finding the words to explain their actions, and what this signified for the two of them going forward.
"I, um... I wasn't opposed to it," Tadao admitted, scratching the back of his neck. "I mean, it certainly wasn't on my bingo card for tonight, and if I was really all that objectionable to it, I would've said something; but was this just, like, a one-off thing, or..."
An akward silence hung in the air for a few moments. It seemed like an eternity and Kagami formed her answer. "It wasn't on my Bingo card either..." She said simply. "As for the one-off thing..." she paused as the words stuck into her throat. "I guess... if thats how you want it to be..."
"No, I-!"
Tadao retracted his hand and sighed. "It's just... I'd like it to... God, there's really no clean way of saying this, is there?"
Kagami watched as he paced back and forth, his hands on his hips as he racked his brain for what he wanted to say.
"Um... Kagami, have you, by any chance... considered the possibility of, um... the two of us being more than... well, whatever this is?"
She turned to face him. Her eyes locked with him. "You want the truth?" she asked.
"W-Well, like... I'm not going to press you for it, if that's what I was insinuating," Tadao insisted. "If you're not comfortable sharing that with me, then I completely understand, but in the unlikely event that you may or may not be wanting to disclose that, I figure that now's as good a time as any to-!"
Kagami let out a sigh. "Look, Tadao. I've been alone ever since Athrun was murdered. I've never had the... comfort... of a proper relationship." She explained to him. She looked away down at the floor. "We've been getting close and... well... I needed to..." she looked up at him. "Try before you buy... as the old saying goes..."
...
"...So you were... Interested?" Tadao asked.
Kagami nodded slightly.
...
"For how long, if you don't mind my asking?"
"Does that matter..." she muttered. "I saw that you've been so good with Hatsune... You put others first... And you... Well..." she looked away. "Look, I said it ok! What more do you want?!"
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I overstepped my boundaries," Tadao apologized. "Um, but... I mean, if it's any consolation... I kind-of-sort-of feel the same way?"
"No, don't apologise!" Kagami said suddenly turning her full attention back to him. "Look, lets be clear here. I needed 'help', and I honestly thought that this would help tire me out so much I might actually get some sleep." She said. "God, I was so bloody stupid..."
She took a few steps towards him. She then grabbed him gently by his shirt, her hand clenching the fabric tightly. "But instead... it just assured me that... I want... I want..." she began to blush even more. "I want you!" she managed to say finally as she pushed her body upto his, looking up at him.
"So it was mutual, then," Tadao gasped, his shock quickly giving way to relief. "Oh, my God... Kagami, you have no idea how long I've been waiting for this... I mean, like, not in a creepy way or anything, I just-!"
"You just what?" Kagami asked softly.
Tadao sucked in his breath. "I have always, always had feelings for you, Kagami; even back when we were kids, you were just this shining beacon of light who always took the initiative and never gave a damn about what others thought about you for it. You were everything I lacked growing up, and one of my biggest regrets was not getting to tell you how I felt before you left for the Academy. Then, suddenly, you come back into my life, and I'm just content to be friends with you in any real capacity; what with everything that Athrun had managed to achieve, I figured you had high standards for your husbands and you were always going to be out of my league, and I accepted that because getting to see you and Hatsune smile was enough for me. And then all this happened, and..."
His face scrunched up as if he were fighting back tears. "I would be so very grateful for the opportunity to pursue a relationship with you, Kagami Izumi; and it doesn't even have to be about the sex, just getting to spend time with you and Hatsune is more than I could ever hope for."
Kagami blinked a few times. "OK..." she said not quite sure how to respond to that. "How about... we try this... properly? Like go on a few dates and stuff...?"
"I'd like that," Tadao replied as he reached up and wiped a tear from his eye. "I'd like that a lot, actually."
Kagami nodded. "Sure then." She replied giving him a small smile. "We should get back to the dining room..."
Tadao's eyes widened as if he had just remembered something. "Wait, we're going to need to tell Hatsune about this, aren't we?"
"When its right to do so." Kagami said. "Speaking of which, I best be getting back to my daughter."
"Oh, but of course," Tadao nodded.
While inevitably, the two of them left Tadao's office having failed to achieve what they had set out to do, they had instead achieved something of much greater significance, and that was the realization that these silly little feelings were indeed mutual. In the coming days, the two of them were going to have a lot to talk about as they adjusted to this new reality, but for now they could revel in the quiet satisfaction that maybe, just maybe, this would be the start of something good between them.
